Rex Redden had his first Muay Thai fight when he was 16 years old. He grew up in the boxing gyms as his father was a New Zealand champion professional boxer in the late 60’s and taught him to box when he was young. He has had 52 fights for 39 wins and has fought in Thailand 7 times and Australia 10 times.
Rex has been mainly based out of New Zealand over the last 10 years and mostly trained out of Alpha Thai Boxing while there. When he was 20 years old he moved to Australia’s Gold Coast to train at Boonchu with ‘John’ Wayne Parr, and since then has returned many times to train with team Boonchu which he considers to be his home away from home.
Rex won his first New Zealand title at the age of only 18 and had his first international fight that year. He also won the south pacific welterweight title later that year. Turning Pro in august 2000, Rex fought against Australia’s Soren Mongkongtong and won a 5 round points decision; Then went on to taking out the New Zealand Pro Welterweight WMC title by knocking out the champion Keo Kitamura in one minute.
After that Rex won the WKBF Pro Welterweight World Title Belt in 2002 after knocking out Krongsak Lek and then defended it against Paul Lee not long after. Rex says his most memorable fights to date are his three fights against the legendary Jombing Sirdor . “He was by far the hardest kicker I have ever come across and is well known for breaking opponents legs with his kicks” said Rex. Rex won two of the fights and lost one. Rex to this day has never been knocked out in all of his fights.
Now training to enter the cage and fight mma in 2008, Rex also owns the CAGE WARS mma promotions in New Zealand and runs Muay Thai promotions very regularly.
Rex teaches Muay Thai and has some of New Zealand’s top fighters training under him in Wellington NZ. |
